General
Swiss International Air Lines (Swiss) was formed after Switzerland’s flag carrier airline Swissair went bankrupt. After a disastrous attempted merger with British Airways, Swiss was eventually taken over by Lufthansa. Despite these difficulties the airline is now financially profitable and has a very good reputation among air travellers, together with its 4-star Skytrax rating. The subsequent financial prosperity has allowed the airline to acquire further interests in the industry. The Swiss International Air Lines Group has the following member companies:
- Edelweiss Air – small-scale charter airline
- Swiss AviationSoftware
- Swiss Aviation Training
- Swiss European Air Lines – regional airline
- Swiss PrivateAviation
- Swiss VirtualAirline
- Swiss WorldCargo
Swiss also has code-share agreements with 28 airlines, some of which are fellow Star Alliance members.
Swiss operates a fleet consisting almost entirely of Airbus aircraft, numbering about 80 planes. The only exceptions are the 14 Avro RJ100 aircraft, but these are used by the regional subsidiary Swiss European Air Lines. Swiss’ international fleet is therefore all Airbus models.
Swiss offers three cabin classes – First, Business and Economy Class. Creature comforts and catering are up to industry standard, as one would expect on one of the premier airlines based in Europe. The frequent flyer program is known as “Miles & More” and is actually the program operated by parent company Lufthansa, in which Swiss participates.
If you are considering flying to Switzerland it is a good idea to investigate Swiss as a possible airline since they provide direct flights to Switzerland and they have a high industry rating and reputation. They also operate regional and domestic flights in that part of the world through their subsidiary concerns. In addition to Swiss, Edelweiss provides seasonal flights to Cape Town.
