General
Olympic Air is a new airline that was established when the former Olympic Airlines was privatized in 2009. Since Olympic Airlines was the national carrier of Greece, the country has no national airline at this time. In early 2010, Olympic Air tried to merge with its strongest rival, Aegean Airlines, but the deal was thwarted by the European competition authorities, who raised the concern that if the merger went ahead the new company would have a roughly 90% domination of the Greek domestic market, which could lead to unreasonable ticket prices.
Olympic Air flies to a relatively small number of international destinations. It is not a member of any of the international airline alliances but it does have code-share agreements with the following airlines:
- Cyprus Airways
- Delta Airlines
- Etihad Airways
- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
Olympic Air offers three cabin classes:
- Business
- Premium Economy
- Economy
There is therefore no first class seating on Olympic Air flights. The Economy class seats are leather. Premium Economy class passengers have the added advantage that they are seated at the front of the aircraft, so that they have greater ease of boarding and disembarking. However, the Premium Economy class is available only on the ten Bombardier Q400 aircraft in the airline’s fleet. Business Class comes with a warm towel before dinner, but is not a substitute for the standard of First Class that is provided on other airlines. The level of catering depends on the duration of the flight. In-flight entertainment is limited to an on-board magazine.
The frequent flyer club is known as the Travelair Club.
Olympic Air operates a fleet of 24 aircraft, most of them propeller-driven, although there are eight narrow-bodied Airbus models. If you do not enjoy or feel safe flying in a propeller-driven aircraft then this is something to take note of.
