General
Lufthansa is a large European-based airline that has the second-largest passenger fleet in the world when all the planes of its subsidiaries are included in the tally (the fleet numbers 710 aircraft in total). Lufthansa employs about 117 000 people and transported more than 90 million passengers in 2010, turning a profit of more than E1bn. Lufthansa has many subsidiaries, including airlines in Switzerland and the Ukraine.
In 2010 Lufthansa announced that it was moving to a new cabin design involving lighter seats for its European fleet. This innovation has brought about improvements in passenger capacity which amount to the purchase of twelve new Airbus A320 planes. Lufthansa also announced a new type of seat which allows higher seating density and/or more legroom. The airline has ordered more than 30 000 of the new seats, and they will be fitted in the planes in 2011.
Lufthansa has three seating classes on its intercontinental flights – First Class, Business Class and Economy Class – but in flights which remain in Europe there are only two classes (there is no First Class). First Class and Business Class both have seats which convert into a 2m (6’6″) bed, and there are also laptop ports and other entertainment options. Free drinks are served in the Economy class. Entertainment is not provided on any short-haul flights.
Lufthansa offers airport lounges in some airports in Germany, but only for Business and First Class passengers. There are four types of lounge:
- First Class
- Senator
- Business
- Welcome Lounges
Besides its Star Alliance partners, Lufthansa also has code-share agreements with the following airlines:
- Air India
- Air Malta
- Avianca
- Cirrus Airlines
- Ethiopian Airlines
- Jat Airways
- JetBlue Airways
- Luxair
- Qatar Airways (only until 31 December 2011)
- TACA Airlines
