General
Kenya Airways was privatized in 1996 and is at present under the ownership of various shareholders, including KLM. The airline has a subsidiary – Precision Air – which is an airline in Tanzania. Kenya Airways also has code-share agreements with 11 other airlines, among them five African airlines, Russian carrier Aeroflot and Korean Air, but none of them amjor international airlines and not with South African Airways either. Kenya Airways does, however, provide flights to South Africa.
Kenya Airways has a reputation as one of the best airlines in Africa. If you are planning on traveling within the African continent and you want to make use of air transport, Kenya Airways is an option.
Kenya Airways operates a relatively small fleet of fewer than 40 aircraft, but currently has more than 20 planes on order, including nine Boeing 787s. These 787s have caused some difficulty because their delivery has been delayed, which led to Boeing paying compensation to the airline. Kenya Airways only uses Boeing and Embraer aircraft, while a 747-400F has been ordered to improve cargo capacity. Kenya Airways is therefore able to offer its passengers the same standard of aviation technology as the other major international airlines, and the fact that the airline is based in Africa or that it is so small does not detract from the quality of its fleet.
However, if you still feel unsafe about using an airline based in Africa, please contact us so that we can advise you and make the necessary travel arrangements for your trip.
