Czech Airlines is the nationalized flag carrier of the Czech Republic. Since the early 1990s, the airline has traditionally been a poor performer on the balance sheet and has never paid a dividend. This has been highlighted by competition regulation authorities in the EU, who have started an in-depth investigation into the airline because they question whether it is able to achieve financial success and adhere to EU provisions concerning national financial support. In recent times the airline has tried to restructure itself by reducing its route network and fleet and taking a massive loan from the Czech government. The concern of the EU regulators is that the airline won’t be able to stay in business without government assistance.
Despite these issues, the airline has been rated with 3 stars and offers flights to more than 100 destinations internationally. Czech Airlines is the only airline on those 32 of those routes, and those 32 routes all originate in Prague. On another 27 routes, there is only one other airline.
Czech Airlines operates a relatively small fleet of 33 aircraft, with another six on order, but the planes are all smaller models and the airline does not operate any of the larger long-haul models.
Czech Airlines offers two cabin classes:
- Business Class
- Economy Class
Cabin services provided are not exceptional. However, Czech Airlines isn’t the only international airline that does not have a first class section on its planes (see also Air Canada), and given its fleet size and financial difficulties the absence of first class seating is not surprising.
