Asia is a vast area on the surface of the earth comprising both land and sea. It extends from the populous nation of India towards its west to the equally populous nation of China in the east. In between, there are many smaller countries, some of which are islands.
The geographical layout of Asia makes air travel convenient. The expanses of water between some of the island countries makes road or rail travel impossible, while sea transport may be too slow for modern business purposes. In the enormous country of China, domestic air travel is also important due to the distances that separate the major urban centers and the large population of potential passengers.
Population size is a major issue in Asia. India has more than one billion inhabitants, and so does China. These countries therefore represent massive markets for service providers, and because the countries are geographically large one of the services that is required is transport. In Asia, an airline may therefore transport relatively high numbers of passengers every year, far higher than what an airline would do in Europe or the USA.
However, the Asian airlines are not merely domestic in their operation. They provide international flights to many destinations in the world and some of them also offer an exceptionally high standard of service on their flights. Three of the six airlines mentioned on this site have been rated with 5 stars by rating agency Skytrax, which is the maximum rating. The 5-star airlines transport passengers from many different countries and their catering and service are geared for different cultures (one exception is Royal Brunei Airlines, which has fewer than 20 aircraft and does not serve alcohol). These are therefore some of the premier public airlines in the commercial aviation industry and if you want to have a more luxurious flying experience you will probably have to book yourself onto a private charter airline.
The Asian airlines all operate relatively large fleets of about 100 planes, except for Royal Brunei Airlines (fewer than 20 planes) and China Southern Airlines (more than 400). They are therefore major players in international aviation and you may expect a reliable service from them.
