In Greece, Aegean Airlines is the main rival of Olympic Air. Aegean Airlines transports more passengers than Olympic Air on an annual basis. The two airlines tried to merge in 2010 but were prevented by European Union competition authorities, who cited the creation of a dangerous monopoly in Greek commercial aviation. Aegean Airlines was named the Skytrax Top Regional Airline in Europe in 2011.
Aegean Airlines provides flights to a small number of destinations in Europe and the city of Tel Aviv in Israel. Besides its Star Alliance partnerships, it has code-share agreements with nine other airlines, mainly domestic operators in Europe, but also with US Airways.

Aegean Airlines offers two cabin classes:
- Business
- Economy
Business Class comes with various perks but they are mainly to do with pre-boarding procedures. Catering is adequate but not lavish in either class, and the food is based on Greek traditional cooking. All seats are leather. Most of the airline’s aircraft have been supplied with an entertainment system (in-flight entertainment system – IFE), and all the planes have a flight information display (Air Show). There are also magazines and complimentary headsets.
The frequent flyer program is known as Miles & Bonus.
Aegean Airlines operates a fleet of 29 aircraft, all of them narrow-bodied Airbus models, and many of them on lease from Olympic Air. Aegean Airlines stopped using Boeing planes in 2010.
